KANSAS BASKETBALL SCANDALS
Kansas won the 1988 NCAA Tournament. A year later Kansas was prohibited
from participating in the postseason tournament. KU is the only school in
NCAA history prevented by probation from defending the men's basketball
championship. Kansas did not contest the penalties, in large part because
school officials were breathing a sigh of relief after the NCAA declined
to inflict the "death penalty" and left them with their national
championship intact.
Kansas made a “mistake” when they approved gifts to graduating players and
others who had used up their eligibility at Kansas, but denied there was
any intentional wrongdoing. Payments were shown to go back as far as 1998.
Instead of sanctioning the basketball program, Kansas decided to address
the violations with "extra education" about the rules regarding gifts.
